More Fall Weekend Activities
My favorite part of Fall in New England is the leaves. Those colors are awe-inspiring and amazing, and having grown up someplace where the leaves went from green to brown to dead (shout-out to New York readers!), I am still amazed by these colors even after 9 years of living in New England. But….we are still too early for good leaf-peeping season, so what else is there to do on the weekend?
Apple picking, of course! We reviewed some fruit picking options back in August, and even in August some apple varieties were available. Traditional apple picking season around here, though, is September, and some of the most delicious (and family-friendly) places we have been for apple picking in September include Fairmount Fruit Farms in Franklin, MA (try saying that five times fast!) (http://www.fairmountfruit.com/); Belkin Family Lookout Farm in Natick, MA (http://lookoutfarm.com/); and in Connecticut at Lyman Orchards (lymanorchards.com) and Bishop’s Orchards (http://bishopsorchards.com/).
Something else that I have always wanted to try with my children, but haven’t done so yet, are some of the Fall adventure parks. These are often located in popular ski areas, and use the same ski lifts and slopes to create mountain adventures and alpine sliding. Check out the one at Jiminy Peak in the Berkshires or in Killington, VT. Note that many of these adventure parks are only open until the end of September, so the time to try them out is now!
Closer to home I would strongly recommend finding some local hiking trails and enjoying the September weather that way.
